Yancey County Update

We've had a wild and snowy winter thus far. I've done the title page for our journal, then left it at a friend's studio for her to play. Here is her page - I love how she used a topography map for her background. Deana Blanchard is the artist, she and her husband, Chuck Young, make beautiful glass and metal work at their Selena Glass and Metal studio. Lots more plans in the works for cool pages, but with the snow falling as I type, it may be a few weeks before it gets back in circulation.

Judging a book by it's cover

The holidays provided me window between schools to do a little up-keep. After a few smeared failed attempts, I decided to just hand-paint the Wake County journal using a red gesso and dry-brush technique in black to show its texture. I then protected it with Matt Modge Podge for all the little hands that will handle it in the coming months.

I also included a few pages to recruit written responses such as the following:
  • A title page noting the artists and where they are from
  • Finish this story...
  • What is your favorite thing to do in Wake County?
So far, there hasn't been a lot of layering because I believe folks don't want to mess up what has come before. So, as guardian, I'm going to try to add layers each time it is returned to create a sense of unity. I'm neglecting my own journal a bit but having much more fun.

Wake County still has open slots in the spring and summer. E-mail me at n2art@hotmail.com if you would like to participate! Happy New Year! Michelle H. Harrell

Happy New Year!!!

Happy New Year to all 100 VIS J's 4 NC participants! Hope everyone had a great holiday season. Just a reminder, I am still waiting to get confirmation on some contracts. Still about 30 counties unaccounted for on my list. If you have any contracts please mail them to me at: DR Modler, PO BOX 161, Boone NC 28607. I am planning to send e-mails to all current guardians this week with additional information. Feel free to keep posting highlights from your county's journal on the blog. Talk to everyone again soon!
